Uzbekistan’s Senate has approved a law adding a new way to determine a child’s surname under Article 69 of the Family Code, the upper house of parliament reported.
A child’s surname is currently based on the parents’ surname. In line with national traditions, either parent may also choose the grandfather’s given name as the child’s surname.
The approved amendment will allow parents to choose a surname derived directly from the father’s given name. The option will supplement the existing rules.
Senators said the change would accommodate citizens’ preferences as well as national and religious traditions. The law was approved after debate at the Senate’s 18th plenary session.
