President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended a foundation-stone ceremony for the new Tashkent–Samarkand highway, his press service announced.
The journey between the two cities currently takes about five hours. Once the road opens, travel time is expected to fall to 2–2.5 hours, with a speed limit of up to 150 km/h on flat sections.
The category A highway will have six lanes, with three in each direction. Construction is scheduled to run from 2026 to 2032.
The project is valued at $2.185 billion. The new road is intended to increase capacity and improve transport links between Tashkent and Samarkand.
