The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) hired more than 2,000 air traffic controllers after a campaign aimed at gamers, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.
The campaign began in April alongside a faster hiring process. According to Duffy, the agency has already met 94% of its annual recruitment target, reaching the mark faster than before.
The more than 2,000 hires represent the largest intake of air traffic controllers in a single year. Another 2,000-plus candidates remain in the pipeline and are preparing to enter the FAA Academy.
The campaign targets people able to monitor several streams of information and make rapid decisions. An interest in video games does not replace professional selection and training.
The FAA is continuing to accept candidates. Those admitted to the academy must complete specialist training before they are cleared to manage air traffic.
