WhatsApp has begun rolling out a set of new features in stages, Meta said. One of the main changes lets users register a separate account directly on an iPad instead of using the tablet only as a companion to a primary phone.
An iPad registration still requires a phone number and a one-time code, according to TechCrunch. Once activated, the tablet can operate as a standalone WhatsApp device.
- CarPlay and Android Auto users can listen to and reply to messages, make calls, view call history and open favourite contacts from the car display.
- An iPad can now register a separate WhatsApp account directly without relying on companion mode for a primary phone.
- The web and desktop apps can open PDFs without a separate download and let users highlight text and add annotations inside a chat; the feature is powered by Adobe Acrobat.
- Songs from Apple Music and Spotify can now be shared through WhatsApp Status.
The global rollout has begun and is being carried out gradually, so individual features may reach users at different times.
