Experts from ETH Zurich and the Swiss National Supercomputing Center copied about 100 petabytes of NASA open data,reportsuniversity.
The archive was housed at the CSCS center in Lugano. It is planned to be made available to researchers in Switzerland and other countries to train artificial intelligence models used in weather forecasting and early detection of natural hazards.
The array includes about 6.5 billion files with data on greenhouse gases, clouds, precipitation and ice sheets. The copy is not static: it will be updated as new NASA materials become available.
ETH Zurich expects that AI models will complement traditional calculations and allow faster forecasting in regions without access to supercomputers. Going forward, CSCS must also accept copies of NOAA datasets.
