Scientists at the Khorezm branch of the Rice Research Institute are developing rice varieties that can grow with limited water and under other adverse conditions.
The breeders aim to produce plants suited to Khorezm’s soil and climate that use less water while maintaining high yields during drought.
One of the key stages is under way in experimental fields, where specialists are crossing promising genotypes in 10 combinations.
Selection criteria include yield, grain quality, maturity time and resistance to water shortages and other stress factors.
The resulting hybrids will be studied over subsequent generations, with plants carrying the most valuable traits selected for further breeding.
